Woodstock took place August 15-18, 1969 with 400,000 estimated attendees but less than half were anticipated. Tickets were just $18 for all 3 days but Woodstock became a free event when so many people showed up.
In 2004 Rolling Stone magazine listed Woodstock as number 19 of the 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll. It is also now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The festival has become widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history as well as a defining event for the counterculture.
